Rock Face Surveys

The potential risk of rockfall or block and slab failures can represent a significant hazard to infrastructure, construction workers and the public. To quantify potential risks a rock face survey can be completed to examine the rock structure and identify potential unstable blocks.

This can either be undertaken remotely from low level, or surveyed directly using a rope access system set up by an IRATA licenced contractor. The survey data can be assessed using photogrammetric and stereographic projection methods to identify the location of unstable blocks, which would be plotted on a zoned rock fall hazard map. This would determine the requirements for any necessary remedial stabilisation measures.
