    Ideal Candidate Background

    • Preferably hold a degree in one of the following disciplines:

      • Geology

    Key Features of the Role

    Typical Fieldwork Responsibilities

    • Supervision of drilling crews and trial pitting operations

    • Oversight of a variety of ground investigation projects

    • Logging of soils and rock core samples

    • Gas and groundwater monitoring

    • On-site liaison with:

      • Contractors

      • Engineers

      • Landowners

    Typical Office-Based Responsibilities

    • Phase 1 desk studies using online data sources and GIS mapping resources

    • Detailed examination and description of soil and rock core samples

    • Preparation of borehole/core logs

    • Data entry and management using the HoleBase system

    • Scheduling of samples for laboratory testing

    • Completion of factual / exploratory hole reports

    • Liaison with clients and drill crews

    • General administrative tasks related to project delivery

    Typical Fieldwork Responsibilities

    • Collection of samples from drilling crews

    • Performing on-site tests, including:

      • Plate load tests (to assess soil bearing capacity and settlement behaviour)

      • DCP (Dynamic Cone Penetrometer) probe tests (to evaluate in-situ soil strength and layer properties)

    • Gas and groundwater monitoring

    • Groundwater sampling

    Typical Office-Based Responsibilities

    • Registration of samples upon return to the stores

    • Preparation and classification testing of soil and rock samples in our in-house laboratory

    • Scheduling of samples for laboratory testing

    • Packaging and despatch of samples to sub-contract laboratories

    • Data entry and management using Excel spreadsheets

    Ideal Candidate Background

    • Minimum 5 years relevant experience as a lead driller on geotechnical ground investigation projects

    • Proven ability to operate one or more of the following rig types:

      • Rotary

      • Cable percussion

      • Window sampling

    • Key competencies required:

      • Strong knowledge of health & safety practices and procedures

      • Preparation of accurate driller’s logs including detailed soil and rock descriptions

      • In-situ testing

      • Undisturbed sampling

      • Coring techniques

      • Installation of standpipes and monitoring wells to BS Standards specification

      • Training and supervision of Assistant Drillers

    • Good mechanical knowledge and experience of daily plant maintenance is advantageous

    • NVQ qualification (or equivalent) in drilling operations would be highly advantageous

    Typical Responsibilities

    • Support the Lead Driller in the daily operation of:

      • Rotary rigs

      • Cable percussion rigs

      • Window sampling rigs

    • Assist with:

      • Installation and removal of borehole casing

      • Handling drilling rods and core barrels

      • In-situ testing and sampling during drilling operations

    • Carry out all tasks under the direct instruction and supervision of the Lead Driller

    • Maintain a strong focus on health & safety at all times
